We set up a Citrix work environment with the PrimeServer Pro and PrimeMini IoTs for six employees at our headquarters and tested it over several weeks. In this tech blog post, we describe the setup of the Citrix test environment and how the PrimeServer pro performed.

What is Citrix and where is it used?

Virtual machines now also exist in server virtualisation or virtualisation solutions for the desktop. What is special about desktop virtualisation? For this purpose, virtual machines are usually preceded by a so-called “connection broker”, which handles authentication, rights management and load distribution and establishes the connection between the thin client (Prime Mini IoT) and the virtualisation host. This instance delivers the virtual machine to the user.

The corresponding component is called the Citrix Desktop Delivery Controller. The desktops can either be individualised or derived from several templates. The extent to which the user is allowed to customise the desktop can also be configured. A separate virtual machine per user potentially allows a higher degree of individualisation and, at the same time, better encapsulation from virtual neighbours than could be achieved with a terminal session.

Citrix Environment PrimeServer Pro

Citrix meets the Prime Server Pro

Following customer requests to see if the PrimeServer Pro hosts a Citrix work environment smoothly and efficiently, we installed a Citrix environment. We had some employees work on our PrimeMini IoT devices for several weeks.

Users were registered and approved in Citrix Studio. The Active Directory takes over the user administration and a database is required for optimal operation. A virtual environment with a domain controller was set up on Windows Server 2019. We installed Citrix Receiver on all PrimeMini IoTs and we established a connection with our Primelab. The IoT devices were set up with Windows LTSC.

Six employees were instructed to work with Citrix and the PrimeMini IoTs. The employees each used two screens with Full HD or 4K resolution. Three employees from the marketing department worked on Citrix with Adobe Cloud, among other applications. All six employees were able to maintain their usual workflow without any restrictions. Microsoft Teams, including video chats and Office 365, worked flawlessly.

The benefits of Citrix are that you save on licensing fees and hardware costs, and employees can access their virtual desktop from anywhere when connected via VPN. With six employees working on Citrix, the Prime Server Pro was never fully utilised. The graph below shows the load on the server over the last 7 days.
