For tech enthusiasts, 2022 can be considered the year when newcomer laptops that focus on sustainability and business applications make their grand entrance.

With our PrimeBook Circular, we made a clear statement at the end of March this year about the future of modular and sustainable computing. We are often asked how we differ from Framework, a company that released a laptop based on a modular system.

This blog post goes into the details of Prime Computer and Framework’s laptop concepts and explains the differences between Prime Computer’s PrimeBook Circular and Framework’s laptop. See for yourself which laptop best suits your needs!

So what does “modular laptop” mean?

A modular laptop is a computer that is designed to take full advantage of hardware upgrade opportunities and reduce costs by using standardised hardware components in its design. The components are interconnected but can be separated and removed for repairs and upgrades. With the introduction of modular PCs, the amounts of e-waste will decrease tremendously because individual components can be replaced instead of replacing the entire system. For example, the processor is soldered on a conventional PC or laptop. If you need a new motherboard because something is broken, you have to get a completely new device.

Modular construction as the future of computing

With acquisition costs of several hundred francs, purchasing a new laptop should be well considered. When selecting devices, many ask themselves how much memory is needed or which processor provides the correct performance for individual needs. Using standardised parts and making it easy to upgrade and retrofit, a modular computer allows users to keep up with ever-changing technology and buy new and more advanced components as they appear on the market. Due to this design, a desktop PC or laptop can get an update in no time and without much expense, and it prevents the need to buy a completely new device. Purchasing a modular device is worthwhile financially and, above all, worthwhile in terms of avoiding CO2 emissions and electronic waste.

Framework Laptop: The Laptop for Hobbyists & Individualists

While most laptop manufacturers still rely on the traditional PC concept of fixed individual parts which means that one is bound to the equipment purchased, Framework relies on a construction kit of many individual parts. This new laptop, launched by the US company Framework Computer, is reminiscent of the Fairphone and offers customisation options and the possibility to upgrade parts instead of replacing the entire device.

The features of the Framework laptop at a glance

The Framework laptop is available with three Intel 12th Gen Core i5 and i7 processor options. The device’s pre-built configurations allow up to 32GB of RAM capacity and up to 1TB of NVMe SSD storage.

The device comes with a 55Wh battery, a fingerprint reader, Windows Precision Touchpad, and a display with a maximum brightness of 400 nits, among other features.

The Framework Laptop is available with Windows® 11.

Who is the Framework Laptop suitable for?

Framework’s concept provides that almost every PC component can be replaced. For example, a new mainboard, keyboard or a wide variety of connections can be installed or removed with the tools provided or via a simple plug-in mechanism. This makes this device particularly interesting for those who want to customise their laptop at a high level and hobbyists who are interested in PC customisation as beginners.

PrimeBook Circular: The laptop for demanding users

At Prime Computer, we designed our PrimeBook Circular notebook with sustainability in mind and business customers’ needs. The result is our Circular product line. The high-performance PrimeBook Circular is the first high-performance device from the Circular line based on the Circular Modularity concept. This is a unique design in which the essential component for a PC is integrated into a handy plug-in card that can be flexibly exchanged. Thanks to this replaceable component integrated into the device, which includes the processor (CPU), graphics card (GPU), WLAN and RAM, the product life cycle of the hardware is extended, and CO2 emissions are demonstrably reduced. Circular devices such as the PrimeBook Circular from Prime Computer’s Circular product line can be configured at the time of purchase and later when the device’s use case and performance requirements have changed. The modular computer component is backwards compatible, which means it is interchangeable and upgradeable within the Prime Computer Circular product line without compromising functionality and performance. In addition, the storage capacity can be configured up to 1 TB and the device can be connected to the climate-neutral PrimeDock Pro docking station.

PrimeBook Circular

The features of the PrimeBook Circular at a glance

Like all Prime Computer products, the PrimeBook Circular is a Green IT product. It is available with various processors from Celeron 6305 to Core i7-1165G7 and is compatible with future versions of the modular computer element.

The high-quality notebook has an anodised aluminium case and a glass trackpad with Microsoft Precision Drivers. A fingerprint reader and an HD IR camera with support for Windows Hello are also part of the equipment.

Despite a powerful 77 Wh battery, the PrimeBook Circular weighs just 1.5 kg. A modern 3,000 x 2,000 touchscreen display with narrow edges and a maximum brightness of 400 nits offers the right solution for many projects.

The PrimeBook Circular is available with a Windows® (10 or 11) or Linux (Ubuntu) operating system.

Who the PrimeBook Circular is suitable for

For all components of our laptop, we only use high-quality materials that currently represent the measure of all things in computing. Therefore, the PrimeBook Circular is best suited for those looking for a powerful, high-performance laptop with an excellent carbon footprint.

Sustainability

In terms of sustainability, both laptops score full marks. Modularity and repairability are central to both devices and significantly impact their carbon footprint. In the case of the PrimeBook Circular, the average 408 kg of CO2e produced during the laptop’s manufacture, distribution and first five years of operation are offset. This makes the PrimeBook Circular 100% climate-neutral. Framework’s laptop is also completely climate-neutral, as can be read on their company website.

PrimeBook Circular and Framework Laptop: A crucial difference

With the PrimeBook Circular, a particular module can be exchanged. This includes CPU, GPU, RAM and Wi-Fi – features on which the performance and lifespan of a PC depend. Since we focused on upgradeability and product durability in developing the Circular product line, it is evident that we can integrate the CPU, GPU, RAM and Wi-Fi unit as a replaceable module in one device. We, therefore, focused on both stability (casing, display, camera, etc.) and modularity (CPU, GPU, RAM and Wi-Fi) in the PrimeBook Circular.

While we pack the essential features of a computer onto a module the size of a plug-in card, the Framework laptop comprises many individual parts. Framework, therefore, focuses on a high degree of customisability.
